Keywords

Essential Question: Which keywords will give you the best search results?

Key Vocabulary
Keywords: The most important words related to a subject, which you type into a search engine to find
the information you want
Precise: Clear and exact
Results Page: The screen showing what a search site found in response to your keyword search
Synonyms: Two or more words with the same meaning or nearly the same meaning
Alternative: A different way to say or do something

How do you use words when you search the Internet?

A search engine uses computer programs to look for information on the Web. However, you need to tell the search engine what to look for. To get
the best search results, you need to choose your words carefully. The most precise words will yield the best results.

When you want to find something on the Web, how many keywords do you usually use?

What do you do when you don’t find what you’re looking for the first time you search?

Student Activity: Doggy Data

Identity

Essential question: How do you present yourself to others on the Internet?
What does identity mean to you?
What things make up someone's identity?
Student Activity:
Three Facts, One fiction
Send me a message in LoopMail that states three facts about yourself and one that is fiction.
Example:
I have over seven hundred videogames
I am color blind
I have been to the Southern Hemisphere
I have been to Japan and England
Then after everyone has sent the message, we'll go through and try to guess which fiction it is!
You are the creators of your online personalities.  This means you can present some aspects of those personalities that you may be too shy or hesitant to express offline.  Is there an aspect of your identity that you would want to express online that you are too shy to do offline?

Forms & Norms

Essential Question: What are the norms of positive online communication?

Key Vocabulary
Form: Things of a similar type that are components of a group. Online, forms of communication we use, such as IM, chat, email, and text.
Norm: Standards and expectations. Norms of communication online influence vocabulary, slang, sentence structure, spelling, grammar, punctuation, tone, etc.
Transcript: A record of someone’s conversation
Emoticon: A graphic used to symbolize emotion online
Internet Slang: Common terms, abbreviations, and acronyms used online

When we communicate using the Internet, cell phones, or mobile devices, it is sometimes hard to know what is appropriate to say or write, given our different audiences. You would probably use a different form (email, IM) and a different norm (standard and expectation for communication) if you were emailing with your teacher than if you were texting with a friend about an assignment.

People communicate in different ways depending on:
The form used
The norms that are expected
The audience (to whom we are speaking)
The purpose of the communication

How would someone your age might greet one of the following people after not seeing him or her for a long time.
Grandmother
Best friend
Teacher

What are some general characteristics of how kids might communicate when they are:
Texting their friends?
Lowercase letters
Informal tone and incomplete sentences
Abbreviations and Internet slang (e.g., LOL)
Emoticons

Writing assignments for class?
Paragraph structure
Standard grammar and spelling
Formal tone and complete sentences
Need to explain fully what’s going on (complete context)

Making a comment on a public message board?
Would identify who I’m responding to by pasting in their post before my response
Probably not be too familiar in tone
Would reveal little or no personal information

Analyzing Transcripts:

Transcript 1
x) Hi Skip. Could you remind me about the exact date for the report deadline? It has been really hectic, because Pam has set another deadline for me around the same time. Would it be possible to set the deadline back?
y) The deadline is two weeks from tomorrow. It sounds like you are swamped, though, so we could make the deadline three weeks from tomorrow. Would that work for you? Would that help you get your work done for me and Pam?
x) That would be terrific. I appreciate it, and I think Pam will as well.
y) No problem. Will I see you tomorrow at the staff meeting?
x) Definitely. I am looking forward to presenting to the group.
y) You will do a great job. See you tomorrow. Lenny.

Transcript 3
x) Hi Mr. Thompson. I don’t understand the assignment you handed out today.
y) What part is confusing to you?
x) The part where it says, “Go to ERIC to search key words related to your topic.” Who is ERIC?
y) I must have forgotten to mention that ERIC is a searchable database on our library computers where you can research articles about your topic. I highly recommend it as a starting point for your research.
x) I usually just go to Wikipedia.
y) For this assignment you need credible research from experts, and you will find that in ERIC. Have I answered all of your questions?
x) Yes, for now anyways. Thanks Mr. Thompson.
y) You’re welcome. Good luck in your research.

Why Care?

Essential Question: How can you be an “upstander”
when cyberbullying occurs?

Key Vocabulary
Bystander: Someone who sees cyberbullying happening, but does nothing to help
Upstander: Someone who helps when they see cyberbullying occur
Empathize: To imagine the feelings that someone else is experiencing

What does it mean to be brave?

To be courageous

How can you show bravery if someone is being cyberbullied and you are a witness?

Wait, what is cyberbullying again? Cyberbullying is the use of digital media tools such as the Internet and cell phones to deliberately upset or harass another person.

Standing up for the target

Getting help from a trusted adult

An upstander:
Is not directly involved in the cyberbullying incident, but steps in to help anyway
Empathizes with the targets of cyberbullying, letting them know that they care and are listening
Does not spread rumors or go along with cyberbullies because of peer pressure, and may even tell the cyberbully to stop
Encourages the target to tell a trusted adult about the situation

Why Care? Student Handout

When finished, upload the file as an attachment and in the body of the message answer the following:
